Coordinator, Regional Development (Greenville, Mississippi)

Company Name:
Teach For America, Inc.
Job Description:
The Role
The Specialist, Regional Development will work with all team members in Growth, Development and Partnerships (GDP) to track and further progress toward ambitious community partnerships, development and fundraising goals . This role will report to the Senior Managing Director of Growth, Development & Partnerships, supporting the entire GDP Team on various projects throughout the year.
The Team
The birthplace of America's music, a major arena in the Civil Rights Movement, and the home of many of our nation's most prolific voices and creative minds - Richard Wright, William Faulkner, BB King, Tennessee Williams, Oprah Winfrey, Jim Henson, Eudora Welty and Morgan Freeman - Mississippi and its residents have long been recognized for their contributions to American society. Yet the state's own culture is a complicated one. The introduction of mechanized farming and the effects of globalization, combined with the residue of a racially segregated past, have forced many people to leave the state to find employment elsewhere and have made Mississippi, and its Delta region in particular, a largely forgotten national treasure. Herein lies our great opportunity, and there is light in the distance on this broad and storied horizon.
Despite myriad barriers and stark disparities that currently exist and stand between Mississippi and its best future, people remain its greatest asset. Many residents who remain rooted here, and those who have come to join them through organizations like Teach For America, are creative, entrepreneurial, resilient and visionary. Educational equity as an expression of social justice is the key to unleashing the potential of the valuable human capital in this small Southern state.
In 1993, Teach For America's Delta region expanded from 9 teachers in Arkansas to 20 teachers across both states, and by 2012, over 550 teachers taught in some 50 districts. In 2013, Mississippi became a distinct region and currently counts 354 teachers in 27 districts and a growing number of alumni leaders including several who are now leading schools. Throughout TFA's history in the region, we have sought to build relationships and partnerships with individuals and organizations in all of the communities we serve; educational excellence and deep-rooted relationships remain our foundation. Teach For America is committed to recruiting locally as well as bringing in to the state energetic leaders to join in the movement of expanding educational equity, diversity and inclusiveness that will lead to this region's renaissance.
